If you’ve ever visited any of the southern states during Mardi Gras season, then you’ve had King Cake before. According to NewOrleans.com, king cake is a mix between a coffee cake and cinnamon rolls. It’s traditionally iced or sprinkled in yellow, green and purple (the colors of Mardi Gras) and stuffed with a plastic king cake baby. I’ll share with you my take on a super easy Mardi Gras king cake recipe hack.
There are many different versions of king cakes with all kinds of fruit fillings like strawberry, raspberry, blueberry and more. The possibilities are endless.
I’m originally from Louisiana, so I grew up on king cake. During Mardi Gras season, we would eat king cake for breakfast, as a snack after lunch and as dessert for dinner. There was king cake at home, at school and in the office. Traditionally, when you cut & serve the cake, whoever ends up with the plastic baby is in charge of bringing the next king cake. So during Mardi Gras season, there is an ever revolving daily dose of sweets!
Now let’s get into this super easy Mardi Gras King Cake recipe. It’s a simple hack only using 3 ingredients and still packing the flavor! Leave me a comment and let me know if you’d give this recipe a try. It’s so simple, even kids can have fun making it. You can put them in mini bundt pans to make their own individual servings.

A Few Tips:
- This recipe is even more delicious on the second day after the bread has had a chance to settle. Most especially the very next morning. I like to warm my slice up in the microwave just a bit to make it nice and warm. 10-15 seconds is plenty.
- The cream cheese frosted cake canย sit at a cool room temperature for up to 8 hours before it should be refrigerated. Just store it loosely covered after it has cooled.
- If eating the king cake for breakfast, make a cup of coffee to go with it! It’s the best! And if you really want to take your Mardi Gras breakfast to the next level, this mardi gras-flavored coffee by PJ’s Coffee of New Orleans is the perfect match.
- Here are the Mardi Gras masks and beads that I have featured in my photos to complete your at-home Mardi Gras celebration.
