And just like that, my very last baby had her 1st birthday party! We celebrated Brooke’s first birthday with a butterfly themed party in our backyard, and I wanted to share a glimpse into the fun with all of you. Truth be told, this birthday and the party was pretty significant for us, not just because Brooke is our last baby, but because this was a true celebration of life.
As everyone recalls, March 2020, changed ALL of our lives forever. But as most of the world was scrambling and on major shutdown mode, at 8:00 A.M. on March 16, 2020, we were calmly walking (or waddling in my case) into the hospital for a scheduled C-Section to give birth to Brooke Bella. To say the hospital was a madhouse was an understatement, but we made it!
At 10:41 A.M., with hot pink nails and tears in my eyes, we delivered a healthy 7 lb. 10oz. baby girl. (She was my tiniest baby. Xavier was 8lb. 9oz and Mia was 8lb. 13oz.) After 4 days in recovery, we brought our bundle of joy home.
One of many things that the beginning of the pandemic proved to all of us, is that we are way more resourceful than we thought! Can I get an AMEN? I took Brooke’s newborn photos myself with this newborn photography prop outfit that I found on Amazon. She was my only baby to not have professional newborn shots so I just knew pandemic or not, that we would find a way to intentionally celebrate her first year of life.
Brooke’s Butterfly Garden
And what better way to celebrate, than with a party. You know how I like to do it! Since Brooke’s birthday is so close to the start of Spring, I thought it would be perfect to party outdoors and invite a few friends over to celebrate with us. Butterflies were the perfect theme for the occasion. I chose pastel pink, blue and lavender as the party colors.
The party backdrop was a 4′ x 8′ blue and purple sequin wall that just glistened so beautifully in the sun with a neon Happy Birthday sign flocked with balloons, 3D gold butterflies and a number one marquee letter.
I even found the most perfect 3D butterfly yard stakes to place in the grass around the backyard to really pull the theme together. (And kept a few after the party in their play space since they’re so whimsical and fun.)
Party Entertainment for Toddlers
In my opinion, every toddler party that has the space available, should rent soft play equipment. It’s fun, it’s safe, they set up and tear down, and the company that I went with even customized the equipment to match the party colors and theme for me.
Party Food & Favors
Because this was technically a “Stop by Covid Party”, we only offered dessert & drinks to our guests that dropped by. Brooke had a cake that we later cut and enjoyed with family that night.
For the party favors, I purchased giant Hershey’s Kisses candies in an after Valentine’s Day clearance sale at Kroger and put them inside pink and lavender cardstock boxes with a gold butterfly closure. They were placed on the party favor table and at each place setting at the kid’s table.
Additionally, I had cupcakes-to-go packaged in the cutest clear/gold cupcake carrier boxes and added a tag on it that said “Brooke’s 1st Birthday. Thanks for Fluttering By.”
Party Decor
Finally, my favorite element to decorate of the entire party was the kids table. I went with a pink sequin table cover and artificial grass table runner. The centerpieces were vases of white baby’s breath flowers that I bought at the local grocery store with pink and gold 3D butterflies clipped on them.
The place settings were clear charger plates with a gold rim, the most adorable butterfly shaped paper plates, and white/gold plastic silverware amongst other small details. The kids sat in mini clear chiavari chairs that I added pink tutus to and finished it off with a purple butterfly costume wing to the back of each chair. Omg. Talk about cute! Ahhh!!
Also, because we’re in Covid times, we had extra disposable pink masks and hand sanitizers on hand for our guests as well. I hung the masks on my gold/white jewelry hanger and stacked the hand sanitizer on a small acrylic riser set that I already had around the house. The pink letterboard in the background read “Welcome to Brooke’s Butterfly Garden. Spread Love, Not Germs.”
This was our first time having friends over at our home since Brooke’s Baby Shower February 2020. So, it definitely took her a while to warm up to a backyard full of people. #PandemicBaby
She clung to me the entire party while our friends were there, but after everyone left, we couldn’t keep her still. She was all over the place. Lol.
Overall, the party was a huge success and we are so blessed to celebrate Brooke and all the joy she brings to our family. I hope that you all enjoyed this glimpse into our day of celebrating.
